The objective of the Committee is to collectively pool our resources, experience and energy to promote the culture of inclusion within the profession, address the gender disparity and recognise the importance of the contribution by Women Architects to the architectural profession and the built environment.

The following are some of the key terms of reference of this Committee:

  1. To collate relevant data to show the level of women's participation/representation in the profession and the building industry.
  2. To address some of the key concerns as follow:-
    • To identify obstacles and how to address the high fallout rate of women architects in architecture profession.
    • Gender pay gap in architecture profession.
    • Promotion of women’s position in the profession and building industry
  3. To set up framework and principles designed to maximise fair and equitable access to opportunities for women Architects to realize the goal of equitable practice.

Objectives:

  • In line with PAM's mission statement "to promote the advancement of architecture and the architectural profession for the betterment of society", the institute, as a leading authority of architecture in Malaysia, should hold a repository of all things related to architecture, including books, journals, archival materials eg drawings, photographs, models, biographical files & papers of architects and practices, audio-visual records, etc.
  • At present there is no collection or resource centre dedicated to architecture in Malaysia (other than the Malaysia Architectural Museum in Melaka whose primary focus is on traditional and historical architecture)
  • An opportunity for PAM to be the leading authority on Malaysian architecture, and with strategic partnerships with bodies like Badan Warisan Malaysia, National Archives where researchers and students can come to seek information on all aspects of Malaysian architecture, with a specialisation on early (and up to current) Modern Malaysian Architecture.
  • The Collections is the trustee of documentary architectural heritage, 'and it will serve not only the creators of the documents or today's researchers but also the community and society in general for many years'.

Objectives and Scope of Work:

The International Affairs Committee 2019/2020 Objectives and Scope of Works are as follows:

  1. To promote international affiliations and to foster close relationships with architects abroad
    • Establish close liaison with UIA and ARCASIA and other International organisations
    • Identify new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and review existing MOUs to establish joint initiatives and programs which are of mutual benefits
  2. To serve as a platform on the exchange of information and ideas on all aspects of architecture and policies related to the architectural profession regionally and internationally
  3. To disseminate information on international programmes, opportunities, competitions and awards with members
    • To promote international competitions and to identify opportunities for our members' participation
    • Promote participation of members in international conferences
  4. To promote the export of architectural services
    • Networking through government agencies such as Malaysia Incorporated Services Berhad, MATRADE, MIDA, MITI
    • Facilitate international trade missions overseas
    • Facilitate networking with international trade delegations
  5. To promote the internationalisation of practice
    • To address issues relating to liberalisation and globalisation
    • Active participation in ASEAN and APEC Architect project.
    • Compile data on target countries on potential projects and practice requirements and challenges. (Initially establishing contacts with embassies and local connections)

The above objectives shall be the basis for the KPI of the committee.

Committee’s Targets 2014/2015

  1. Memorandum on PAM’s position on Liberalisation
    - To issue the Memorandum on PAM’s position on liberalisation, and to arrange a meeting/dialogue with the relevant Minister to present the Memorandum
  2. Guideline and matrix for local and foreign architects collaboration
    - To work together with LAM on preparing the guidelines
    - The Committee proposed to include a new category ‘Collaborative with Non-Malaysian Architects’ for PAM Awards, to clearly identify and recognise the Malaysian Architects doing collaboration works with foreign architects.
  3. Architecture Malaysia website
    - To develop a website in promoting the Malaysian architecture. This website will promote works by PAM Member/Malaysian Architects.
  4. Lecture Series on ‘Design’
    - To work together with CPD and Design Lecture Series Committee to look into organising series of lectures on ‘design’.

Objectives

  1. Architecture has an impact on each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals & the 5 New Urban Agenda, and architects can help the goals to be achieved. The Committee have the responsibility to contribute to the built environment and assist and provide proper guides to our profession to make wise choices that change the world for the better—through better buildings, settlements, landscape architecture and urban planning.
  2. To outline action plans to resolve issues of climate change and urban growth by the promotion of sustainable social and environmental human settlements through the effective use of the New Urban Agenda in line with objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  3. To promote design and planning approaches those are socially responsible, inclusive, and accommodate the needs of all people.
  4. To assist and educate members to incorporate renewable energy production in buildings and settlements designed for low energy use by adapting to local geographic, climatic and cultural conditions.
  5. To promote measures that help to make cities more inclusive, safer and more resilient, and adaptive to anticipated climate change, with special attention to vulnerable segments of society.
  6. To create activities i.e. CSR, with other professions, with civic institutions, and with fellow citizens, to advance the goals to achieve a prosperous and sustainable future.

Objective

The Committee’s objective is to work with all stakeholders and function as key advisor in striving for an improved delivery of housing projects and the betterment of quality of lives in housing communities.

Scope of Works

  1. To act as the “expert” group of PAM which deals with all matters of Housing that have been referred to Council from both the government and private sectors, the public or any other organisation.
  2. To provide an advisory service to practising architects, the government or the private sector.
  3. To assist the government in proposing and developing related guidelines to arrive at acceptable standards and specifications for low and medium cost houses.
  4. To engage in dialogues with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government regularly in housing related matters that needs urgent attention by all stakeholders.
  5. To respond to housing problems, identify housing issues, and create awareness among members to keep them informed on housing issues.
  6. To defend and advance the important role of architects to the public, developers, authorities and government in matters related to housing in the country.
  7. To engage in greater context with the housing communities and public to congregate information that can be promoted to all the stakeholders concerned for improvement to the current systems and policies.
  8. To explore more participation of architects via open competitions in the design and construction of affordable homes in the greater Klang Valley with all stakeholders, namely the Public and private sector property developers.
  9. To hold workshops to discuss housing issues and problems and publish solutions for public consumption.
  10. To build up a resource centre or databank of information on housing where literature and expertise can be extracted from by the practising architects, government, private sectors and the public.
  11. To undertake studies and assignments on housing.
  12. To organise research programmes for architectural students.
