Dear PAM Member,

Greetings from Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM).

PAM Resource Centre (PAM RC) is pleased to announce our book reading session series, dubbed Find the Truth: Architects Do Not Read. The session is to inculcate reading habits as well as acquaint members with the Centre.

At each session, a guest architect will select a book from PAM RC’s collection and share the content of the book with audiences. The session will continue with discussion with audiences.

VERITAS Architects Sdn Bhd, Director

Lillian Tay is Design Principal at VERITAS Architects Sdn Bhd, an award-winning Malaysian architectural firm established in 1987. VERITAS aspires to create architecture that responds to the local place and culture. With their office at KLCC the past 19 years, VERITAS is passionate about KL’s urban environment and is a fervent advocate for better urban planning and the public realm. VERITAS’ notable projects include DiGi HQ, One Sentral, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Putrajaya Sentral, Kuala Lumpur MRT stations, W-Hotel, Sinkeh Hotel, Star Residences and Oxley Towers.

As the current President of PAM (Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia), her goal is to promote the expertise of Malaysia’s professional architects and to enhance opportunities for Malaysian architects to serve our community and contribute meaningfully to nation building.

Trained at Princeton University, USA, Lillian worked in Florence, Frankfurt and at KPF, New York before returning to Kuala Lumpur where she has been a director at VERITAS since 1995.


CALL FOR PAPERS - UIA 2020 RIO

The next UIA World Congress will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 19 to 23 July 2020. UIA2020RIO invites architects, researchers and students from all over the world to submit projects relevant to the main theme "All Worlds. One world. Architecture 21" and its four sub-themes: Diversity and mixture; Changes and Emergencies; Vulnerabilities and Inequalities; Transience and Flows.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is 30 September 2019.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS - THE DAYLIGHT AWARD

The International Union of Architects is proud to announce its first endorsement of the Daylight Award, a biennial prize that promotes daylight research and daylight in architecture, for the benefit of human health, well-being and the environment. Now in its third edition, the Daylight Award is divided into two categories: Daylight Research and Daylight in Architecture, each of which carries a financial compensation of €100,000.

BARBARA CAPPOCHIN INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE PRIZE

The 2019 Barbara Cappochin Biennial International Architecture prize was awarded to Fasch&Fuchs.architekten (Austria) for the Federal School of Aspern (Austria). The international jury also awarded 3 special mentions. The prize seeks to spotlight the central role that architecture plays in the evolution of landscape. It focusses on urban peripheries, the use of bio-architecture, energy efficiency and sustainable urban development.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON BAUKULTUR

The Swiss Federal Office of Culture (FOC), the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), the International Union of Architects (UIA), the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects (SIA), and the Department of territorial development of the Canton of Geneva will hold a conference on “Getting the measure of Baukultur” on 4-5 November 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland.

ARCHITECTURE OF MIGRATION - BALTIC ARCHITECTS UNION ASSOCIATION

The “Architecture of Migration” international conference focusing on migration and its interactions with architecture, territorial planning, and infrastructure development will take place on 7-8 November in Riga, Latvia. It is organised by the Latvian Association of Architects and Baltic Architects Union Association.

NATIONAL ORDER OF ARCHITECTS OF CHAD

Hayatte Ndiaye has been elected president of the National Order of Architect of Chad. She is the founder of Hayatt Architecture, an architectural agency based in N’Djamena, Chad. Hayatte Ndiaye is the country’s first female architect and the first female president of the architectural organisation.

ORDER OF ARCHITECTS OF SENEGAL

Jean Augustin Carvalho was elected president of the Order of Architects of Senegal. He takes over from Fodé Diop, current UIA Region V Council Member. The new president is a graduate of the Ecole d’Architecture et d’Urbanisme de Dakar and director of Archi-Building & Consult, an architectural agency based in Dakar, Senegal.

Speculative Design is about looking into the future and to speculate on things that could be and should not be based on scenarios and issues we are currently facing today. We should start considering the looming issues such as advancement of technology and automation may threatens the profession of architects and designers alike. Through an intellectual discourse, this Speculative Design workshop will facilitate ways to look forward through different disciplines, medium and lenses to address challenges and opportunities of the future, with the hope to find possible solutions. During this workshop the intellectual discourse will address the current issues that will then be represented through physical products or digital visuals which will be supported by written documentation produced during the workshop. The time capsule will contain archives of works and documents produced during this workshop in the form of a thumb drive, CDs, photos, physical souvenirs and printed documentations. All of these items will be kept in the capsule and will only be revealed in 2029. However, the physical products created during this workshop will be on display for a month with minimal vague descriptions. Detailed explanation of the these products will only be known in 2029.

On behalf of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, we are pleased to invite you to participate in the HKIA Cross-Strait Architectural Design Symposium and Awards ('CADSA') 2019 to be held on 21 June 2019.

With Create Hong Kong of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as lead sponsor, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) as the organizer in collaboration with the architects associations in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Taipei and Macau, the biennial HKIA Cross-Strait Architectural Design Symposium and Awards (“CADSA”) enters into its fourth edition and has been recognized as a vital platform in the Cross-Strait region for interactions and promotions of architecture and the celebration of design excellence, advancing of architectural design in the region towards the international arena.

With the theme “Shape the Shapeless: Cross-Strait Architects and the Architecture of the Belt and Road and Africa”, CADSA 2019 would like to go beyond the Cross-Strait region to include also architectural projects in the Belt and Road countries by our architects. Renowned architects from some of the Belt and Road, and African countries, such as Iran and South Africa, have been invited to speak at the Symposium. A number of Consulates General of the Belt and Road countries and Africa, would also be invited to participate in the celebration of CADSA 2019.
