Synopsis
Malaysia once had a great timber culture. Endowed with rich and diverse forest resources, timber was used widely and intensively. Timber was used for household utensils, houses and palaces as well ship building. Ironically today, the timber industry here is suffering from a crisis of confidence. It is confronted with many perception problems such as deforestation, supply, durability, expensive, fire and termites. Client confidence and all round knowledge on timber is lacking mainly due to the decline in timber construction works after the 80’s. Consequently this trend also did not encourage further research and innovations in timber technology in the country.
Building in recycled timber is a re-learning process in timber design and construction. Lessons learnt from the entire process from procuring the timber, processing and to building will be shared in this paper. Timber lends itself well to recycling. It is easy to work with and requires less energy than steel to process. Fortunately, well-built timber buildings of the 50s and 60s provided source for good quality timber.
Biography
Azman Zainal Md. Nor is currently the principal of Arkitek Azman Zainal. Connection to the human condition is one of the main pursuits of his work as well as the issue of local identity and use of crafts and natural materials such as timber and stone. His firm is also involved with restoration and conservation of historical buildings.
He was one of the founding directors of Das Azman Architect Sdn Bhd where he practiced from 1992 to 2010. Upon graduating from Deakin University, Australia, he served with the government of Malaysia in the Jabatan Kerja Raya specialising in Medical and Health Facility Design for a period of 7 years.
When he was in JKR, he was involved in the Master Planning of Universiti Utara Malaysia and Universiti Islam Antarabangsa and the design of UKM Teaching Hospital.
At Das Azman Architect he was involved with the Putrajaya Government Office Complex Parcel C and the Prince Court Medical Centre.
He also teaches part-time at various public and private universities. Currently he is teaching part-time at Lim Kok Wing University of Creative Technology.
