My Heritage Protection Journey under ASA Architectural Conservation Committee

For a century, Thailand has been influenced by the forces of modernization and globalization. Unfortunately, the drive for economic growth has degraded cultural heritage and devalued community life.In 1968, architects, scholars, and people concerned about architectural conservation gathered together under ” The Academic Committee: The Fine Arts Commission”, the first in Thai history, was thus established as a body working under the Association of Siamese Architects under the Royal Patronage. The name of the Committee was changed to “ The Architectural Conservation Committee” following the change of the ASA ’s administration structure. But there’re still be volunteer architects who work continuously to serve the Nation as a Heritage Conservation body.

I’ve joined the committee in 2002 and have served the Thai heritage conservation society since then. In 2008 I have a chance to organize a big event to celebrate the 40 years of ASA Architectural Conservation Committee. I’ve learned a lot about what the past generation architects have done to protect our heritage. In this same occasion, as chairwoman of the committee, I have supported new generation of conservationist architects to initiate many significant conservation projects in Thailand such as VERNADOC workshop, old community conservation etc.

Recently in June 2017, ASA reconsider it’s essential role to Thai Heritage Conservation by establishing “The Urban Heritage Center” under the Office of Academic Affairs following my proposal in 2016. It will be in charge of Architectural and Architectural Heritage Inventory, knowledge management and give academic support to the ASA Architectural Conservation Committee which will celebrate it’s 50 years anniversary in 2018.
