Synopsis:

This lecture series coincides with Cox Architecture’s 50th birthday this year. Our story began in 1964 when Philip Cox and Ian McKay completed the C B Alexander Agricultural College in the Hunter Valley in New South Wales. At that time only houses embodied a distinctly Australian character. The College turned Australian Architecture ‘on its head’ as it showed a way for larger, institutional buildings to relate to the Australian landscape. Cox Architecture has gone on to design buildings of every possible type and scale. Yet an ethos about art, structure, craft and nature underpins all our work, throughout Australia and to South East Asia and China. We would like to demonstrate how our ethos is manifest in terms of both individual and multiple influences. Our prevailing aim is to create a humanistic architecture no matter how much technologies, socio-economics or politics change. The talk will focus on the work of the Brisbane branch which won a record 5 awards at the World Architecture Festival in 2013.
