Speakers' Biography

Jim Fah graduated from the College of Agriculture, Serdang, Malaysia and obtained his Masters Degree in Aquaculture from Deakin University, Melbourne. His 50 years of agricultural activities include horticulture, aquaculture and aquaponics disciplines

Jim always believed that there must be a simpler way of growing plants in containers, from small to large structures. It was with this belief that he invented the Autopot Technology.

In 1992, his technology was awarded the best invention by the Inventors Association of Victoria. At The Royal Melbourne Show organized by The Royal Agriculture Society of Victoria, Jim’s invention won the first prize in Best Farm Innovations Category for the “The Most Innovative Use of Water” farm award.

Though semi-retired now, Jim is still actively involved in R & D work continually making improvement to the Autopot Technology focusing on food production in arid areas. As Jim sees it, the fullest potential of the Autopot Technology is yet to be realised. He reckons, what he has discovered so far is only the tip of an iceberg. By now, more than a million pieces of the Autopot Units have been sold worldwide.

He has written and published a book called “Hydroponics Made Easy”. The needs for doing so arise from the fact that Autopot Technology is so different from other hydroponics systems and no existing publication has satisfactorily explains it.

Synopsis of Presentation :

Jim Fah’s presentation is about Autopot Technology and its applications on urban agriculture. Autopot Technology is the speaker’s invention. This unique watering and feeding system is very unlike any other watering systems in the world. It’s “Plant Driven”. Which means that plant/s grown in each Autopot unit dictates exactly when and how often it should be watered and done without any human intervention or electronic sensors. Because it is plant driven, you can expect watering to be very accurate. So much so, there is no excess water run- off. That’s right, no wastage. Its other outstanding attributes are its simplicity, its versatility and very forgiving.

Jim will explain how the Autopot’s Plant Driven concept works, why plants grow so well in the Autopot Systems and how it can be used in urban agriculture. He will be drawing from his vast experience on past Autopot projects to support his presentation.

There will also be several cross references to other watering systems, such as, the ebb & flow, sprays and drip, comparing with their advantages and limitations.
