Speakers' Biography

Born in London, UK, in 1956, Dr Nigel Taylor has been Director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens for the past seven years. He was part of the team that achieved its inscription on to the UNESCO World Heritage list in July 2015. He previously worked as botanist, then Curator of Horticulture and Public Education, at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK (1977–2011), where he led a team that achieved World Heritage status in 2003. Trained as a botanist, he is a specialist in the Cactus Family and more recently botanic garden history, and is also a Chartered Horticulturist, who cultivates a small private garden in Singapore. He has published 10 books and more than 270 research papers and popular articles. He has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Banksian Medal (Kew Horticultural Society, 2009), the William Aiton Medal (RBG Kew, 2011) and the Public Service Medal, Silver (Rep. Singapore, 2015).

Synopsis

The speaker will narrate the history of the Botanic Gardens, including its landscape, economic role and social history for Singapore, as well as its cultural importance and the journey to inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
